You can complete your Federal Application for Student Aid (FASFA) as early as January 1st. But what we normally find is that families wait until the last minute to fill it out. Families begin to feel the heat because depending on your school, state, and the type of aid, awards go out on a first come, first serve basis. So, if families wait last minute to complete their FASFA they will more than likely receive less aid then what they would have if they completed it earlier, during January.
For under the radar players the Pell Grant could greatly affect the final decision for which school a player decides to commit to. The aid received from the FASFA could cover a good portion of tuition, especially for cheaper in-state schools and junior colleges.
The FASFA will ask your family to provide:
-Informaiton on the student-athlete
-The Dependency of the student-athlete on their parents
-Information on the student-athlete’s parents
-Financial background of the student-athlete and their parents
– The list of schools you would like the FASFA to send your information to.
College can be very expensive. Therefore, the process of filling out your FASFA early is very important. Most families like to minimize the amount of loans taken out for school. While most families take out loans to afford college, filling out the FASFA early and making yourself eligible for as much aid as possible will only help reduce the out of pocket expenses. So, if you haven’t FILL OUT YOUR FASFA TODAY!
When you are filling out your FASFA you will need:
-Driver’s License for family members
-All W2’s from this year and last year
-Social Security numbers for the family members
-Most recent tax returns
-All financial information you may need to report (Mortgages, Businesses etc…)
