As much as we think basketball recruiting is about talent, another HUGE part is your academics! Academics play such a huge role in recruiting and many players do not even understand the impact it can on your recruitment. Coaches are looking for well-rounded athletes! Meaning players that can compete on the court at a high level and players who can take care of business in the classroom. If you are ineligible come second semester what good are you to a college coach?
Also, many coaches are looking to recruit players with good academics (GPA & Test Scores) because normally these players are able to attain other academic scholarships and grants to cover tuition. Which means college coaches do not have to empty their athletic scholarship budget to get players. Most D2 and NAIA players are receiving both Athletic Aid & Academic Scholarships to help cover tuition. Usually, if a player is not eligible for academic scholarships and grants they would be too expensive to offer a scholarship. Or the student-athlete would have to apply for different loans.
